The big bell, called ‘Buga’
1484
In Slavonic, buga means bull. On the upper side, the old Buga is decorated with a network of flowers and geometrical stylisations, ending towards the centre in campanile-like tassels. Encircling the bell is a Romanian inscription in Cyrillic letters, with the mention of the bell founder. There follow, on six horizontal lines, covering about three fourths of the bell’s outer surface, another inscription, mentioning both Stephen the Great and Iacov Putneanul. Jesus Christ on the cross is also rendered on the bell, in an oval medallion adorned with floral motifs.
