Epitaph
According to the Greek inscription embroidered in the central part of the epitaph that is between Jesus and the angels in the upper register, the iconographic theme presented here is the lowering into the tomb. Around the central character are placed - in a variety of attitudes, gestures and expressions - the other characters, more numerous here than in any of the previous Romanian epitaphs with similar scenes. At Jesus’ head, Virgin Mary presses her cheek against her son’s cheek, in a mournful attitude, at the same time holding his head with both hands; behind her, Mary Magdalene throws her arms upwards towards heaven, in a grievous gesture.
