Phelonion
March 18 1614
This phelonion is made from two types of fabrics, that have different colours and decorative elements, which are set apart above the waist by a gold lace , approximately 4 cm wide. The upper side, in the shape of a lid, is made of red silk and is decorated with the sign of the Greek cross, drawn on its back with the same gold lace. Wreaths of leaves, with goblets or crosses in their centre, sown with a gold thread, are repeated in alternate registers on the entire red background of the upper side of the phelonion, signifying of course, the purple mantle from the episode of Christ being mocked at Pillate’s court.
