Mitra

XVIth - XVIIth century

Mitra
Made of red velvet, of cylindrical shape, like a small kamelaukion, this mitre is decorated with four seraphim, embroidered in gold, silver and silk threads, all around the skullcap, thus being destined for an archimandrite with the rank of a mitrophoros (someone who is allowed to wear a mitre). In the front, inside a semicircular space, bordered by the wings of other four seraphs, a symbolic scene is embroidered, representing the Holy Trinity, and on the lid of the skullcap, in a central medallion, the Virgin Mary Oranta or Vlahernitissa is portrayed.
