The tomb of Saint Stephen the Great
After 1492
A masterpiece of the genre, of unique sumptuousness in Romanian medieval art, Stephen the Great’s tombstone is set on a pedestal just as sumptuous, adorned with vegetal stylisations and with a marble canopy built in 1934. The pedestal is richly adorned with stems shaped as hearts, in a succession of four joined medallions, having ample palmettes with gentian flowers and clusters of fruits in the middle. The centre of the rectangular tombstone is adorned with two harmoniously intertwined stems, forming between them three quasi ellipsoidal medallions, where the traditional palmettes and gentian flowers alternate with acorns and oak leaves, the symbols of vigorous life, fertility, and perenniality. The border is also adorned with stylised oak leaves.
