Psaltichii

The Greek word psaltiki from which the Romanian one comes, has two meanings: one is music for psalms, the Orthodox religious vocal music, and one is a book that teaches such music. The music school in Putna flourished to such an extent that it became one of the most important in the whole history of Byzantine music. The foundations of this school were laid by Eustace - a composer of Byzantine hymns, who is said to have conducted the choir at Stephen the Great’s funeral - in the last decade of the 15th century and the first four decades of the 16th century.
