In 1569, Petru Albotă, a Moldavian boyar endowed the Putna Monastery with a Gospel Book written on vellum and decorated as befitting a gift made to a princely foundation. The pages, covered in careful lettering, are gilt with dots, letters, titles, words, or even entire lines in gold. Full‑page colored portraits of the evangelists stand out on golden backgrounds surrounded by frames.

The multicolored braids that form the first letters or frontispieces are slashed with golden lines.
Two dedicatory notes in Slavic contain information about the manuscript: “By the will of the Father, the help of the Son and the fulfillment of the Holy Spirit, I, the servant of God, pan Peter Albotă, Chancellor, have had this Gospel Book made and presented it to the Holy Monastery of Putna in memory of my parents and myself. Therefore, holy fathers, I pray that if someone should begin to read in it things helpful for salvation, remember us in your holy prayers, so that Christ may remember you in His holy kingdom, amen. In the year 7077 <1569>, on the 5th day of August”.
The second note is as follows: “This Gospel Book was presented by pan Albotă the Chancellor to the Holy Monastery of Putna, which is dedicated to the Dormition of our Mistress, the Holy Mother of God, for the eternal remembrance of his soul and the soul of his parents, in the times of Hegumen Spyridon, in the year 7077 <1569>, on the 5th day of August”.
Two years later, Peter Albotă would bind the book in silver‑gilt covers. The event was recorded in two texts, just slightly different – a note in the manuscript (mentioning the date when the binding of the Gospel Book was commissioned: the 14th of April) and an inscription on the second cover (with the date when the binding was finished: the 5th of August).
