Saint Theodosius from Schitu Mare – Maniava

Saint Theodosius from Schitu Mare – Maniava

At the Putna Monastery lived our Venerable Father Theodosius († September 24, 1630), fellow‑struggler and disciple of Venerable Father Job Kniaghinițki from the Schitu Mare (“Great Skete”) – Maniava Monastery in Pokutia, in Poland at that time (today’s Ukraine).

This monastery, founded in 1612, was the main fortress against Uniatism in the Ruthenia region (which was proclaimed at the Union of Brest in 1596) and also a center of spiritual life, influencing numerous monasteries in the area.

Venerable Theodosius grew up spiritually at Putna, being tonsured into monasticism and later ordained a hierodeacon. Then he left for the Great Skete Monastery and became a disciple of Venerable Job. He wrote a book called Theodosius’ Testament, which was disseminated together with another book, The Life of Our Venerable Father Job.

Venerable Fathers Job and Theodosius were canonized in 1944 by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and are commemorated together on September 24, as well as part of the Synaxis of the Saints from Galitia, commemorated on June 24.
