The Lamentation of the Lord is another monumental embroidery that Stephen the Great, his consort Mary, and their son Bogdan gifted to the Putna Monastery in 1490. The epitaphios has in its center Jesus’ body taken down from the Cross, surrounded by Virgin Mary, the myrrh-bearers, Saint John the Apostle, Joseph, Nicodemus, and eight angels. The symbols of the four evangelists, as described in Ezekiel’s and Revelation Books, are embroidered in the corners. The iconographic composition of this epitaphios is more extensive than that of Euthymia’s, where Jesus was surrounded only by angels. In the 1490 epitaphios, the atmosphere is more dynamic, and the conveyed feeling of grief is more powerful.

According to archive documents, at the beginning of the last century or even earlier, the 1490 epitaphios was kept in a wooden frame with compartments next to Stephen the Great’s tomb.

“By the will of the Father, the help of the Son, and the fulfillment of the Holy Spirit, Io Stephen Voivode with his right-believing Lady Mary and his beloved children, Alexandre and Bogdan-Vlad, hath this aër (epitaphios) made at the Monastery of Putna, that is put under the protection of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God and Forever Virgin Mary, in year 6998.”
