The Lamentation of the Lord is another monumental embroidery that Stephen the Great, his consort Maria, and their son Bogdan donated to Putna in 1490. In its center, the epitaphios has Jesus’ body taken down from the Cross and surrounded by Virgin Mary, the myrrh bearers, Saint John the Apostle, Joseph, Nicodemus and eight angels. The symbols of the four evangelists as described in Ezekiel’s and the Revelation Books are embroidered in the corners. This epitaphios has an ampler iconographic composition than Euthymia’s, where Jesus was surrounded only by angels. It also has a more dynamic atmosphere, and the conveyed feeling of grief is more powerful.

According to archive documents, at the beginning of the last century and maybe even earlier than that, the 1490 epitaphios had a wooden frame with compartments and was kept next to the tomb of Stephen the Great.

„With the will of God, the help of His Son and the work of the Holy Spirit, Io Stephen Voivode, with his right-believing Lady Maria and his most beloved children, Alexandru and Bogdan-Vlad, hath this aër (epitaphios) made at the Monastery of Putna.”
