At Prince Stephen’s Gates

At Prince Stephen’s Gates

La poartă la Ștefan Vodă (“At Prince Stephen’s Gates”) is a poem written by Bukovina poet Teofil Dumbrăveanu, a former political prisoner during the communist regime, as a hymn to Prince Stephen the Great, Romanian spirit, and national identity. The volume also includes songs and ballads written to be sang by “Rhapsode Teofil” accompanied by a shepherd’s flute or an alpenhorn.

The book was first published in 1985 by the Junimea Publishing House and the religious terms were removed from that edition, as well as many stanzas including religious references.

The full manuscript was entrusted to the Putna Monastery for publication by Corneliu Dumbrăveanu, composer and musical conductor, who was the author’s son. IT is now published in its definitive and uncensored edition.
