The book “The Refuge. 1940-1945”, the fourth in the “Bukovinan Destiny” collection, presents what has happened to Romanians and Romanian identity in Bukovina after its occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940 and then again in 1944; the present work analyzes the refuge in Romania of most of the Romanian elite of Bukovina, who, had they not sought asylum, would have faced deportation or death; nevertheless, the act of seeking refuge was not an easy path, but rather martyrdom, both through uprooting and through confrontation with the communist regime that would be established after World War II in Romania.
